Calgary is located in the province of Alberta and its metropolitan area has a population of over 1 million people acccording to Canada's 2006 Census. According to a history on Calgary Kiosk, Calgary began as a fort in the 1870s and officially became a city in 1884 following the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Calgary's economy was first focused on cattle and agriculture in the early 1900s, and the city later began a major production of oil and gas.
